Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 is largely regarded as a masterpiece, with the composer demonstrating exceptional control over the work’s massive scope. However, this piece was produced during a time when Russia was undergoing significant upheaval, and it represented a period of immense grief for both the composer and the Russian people.
The lackluster performance of Symphony No. 1 left Rachmaninoff devastated and depressed for years. The composer had to go through therapy to regain the confidence to write music again. Luckily, the later success of his piano concerto No. 2 encouraged Rachmaninoff to complete his Symphony No. 2, which premiered in St. Petersburg in 1908.
Rachmaninoff loved the solemn melody of the Gregorian Chant “Dies Irae”, which also appeared in Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, and incorporated the music into his Symphony No. 2. The text “Dies irae, dies illa” may be the best description of Russia at that time. With a more subtle touch, Rachmaninoff wove the Catholic religious music into the very structure of the composition, turning the omnipresent melody into the theme that ties the massive masterpiece together.
Led by NTSO guest conductor Lan Shui, NTSO brings Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 to Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. Audiences who will be joining us at all three national-level concert halls can look forward to a complete experience of enjoying NTSO’s interpretation of the Symphony at three different venues that each offer their unique acoustics.
In Taichung and Kaohsiung, young violin soloist Belle Ting will perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, which is deep, majestic, and full of strong emotions. For the Taipei concert, we will perform Debussy’s Fantaisie for Piano and Orchestra, a three-movement piano concerto. This will be presented by pianist Yi Fan-Chiang, who is very active in performing, pedagogy, and public affairs.
